Follow Friday and Blogger Hop!

Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee

This weeks question: Q. ACK! Your Favourite book/movie character (example Hermione Granger played by the Emma Chick) just walked into the room! Who is it and what would be your first reaction?

Ah! This is a tough question...There are so many. I think I'm going to go with Jace Wayland from City of Glass by Cassandra Clare. (a slightly older version of him would be nice) He is funny and sarcastic and has this 'I don't give a crap' attitude that I love. But at the same time he is so vulnerable and hell bent on protecting those he loves. And he is YUMMY! Covered in scars and tattoos that all Shadowhunters have. If he walked into the room I'd go completely fangirl on him. I'd jump into his arms screaming.
Once I thought I saw Robert Pattinson in town and I actually nearly threw up. I didn't...and it wasn't him!

Jamie Campbell Bower will be playing the part of Jace in the City of Bones movie. Something to look forward too!

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Crazy for Books and is a place just for book bloggers and readers to connect and share our love of the written word! This weekly BOOK PARTis an awesome opportunity for book bloggers to connect with other book lovers, make new friends, support each other, and generally just share our love of books!

This week's question is:

What keeps you reading beyond the first few pages of a book, and what makes you want to stop reading a book and put it back on the shelf?"

I recently stopped reading a book after the 4th chapter (it is not something I do often or like to do) but I just found it so boring. It was all descriptive writing. The author described the surrounding forests and plant life for pages and then moved on to the mountains and the people's appearance. By the 4th chapter I still didn't know anything about the characters, or who was even the main one. There was very little dialogue or action. I like books that describe the setting but this was too much.

What keeps me reading? I'm not too sure...I am a big fan of dialogue and relationships. If it started with a witty character I'd be quite intrigued. Or some mysterious/curious opening like 'I heard a noise outside my window'. I loved the opening line of The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd

"In the middle of my marriage, when I was above all Hugh's wife and Dee's mother, one of those unambiguous women with no desire to disturb the universe, I fell in love with a Benedictine monk."

  1. I agree, too much description at the cost of everything else makes me stop reading - it's why I can't read Charles Dickens, I can't get past the endless description in the first pages!

  9. I love Jace too! And can I ask what book it was that described the setting for SO long?

  10. Haha ya it was The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel. I have heard such great things about but I just couldn't get into it. They have been wandering the forests looking for a cave for the last 4 chapters. I will try again at some stage!

  11. thanks for the hop by...and I do have to say that opening line is certainly intriguing enough to make me want to keep reading...I might have to go out and get that book!

  12. That is a great opening line. Some books open well but then fade. And some books are slow starters but then build into very worthwhile reads. That's why I hate giving up on books. But sometimes I keep reading and they don't seem to get any better. (If descriptions get too boring, I'll skim to the good stuff.)

  14. Great choice, Jace is pretty amazing! That's funny about you thinking you saw Robert Pattinson and nearly throwing up...I bet that's happened here in Wichita, because there is a guy here that is kind of a look-a-like for Rob. I've never actually seen him in person, but he was on The Maury Show (or one of those shows) about people who look like celebrities. A LOT of people were following him around, convinced it was him, lol. Great answer on the Hop, too. I like when the author paints a good picture of the environment and what the characters look like, but there is definitely such a thing as being too descriptive. Books like that bore me too!

  17. I am your newest GFC follower.
Liked you answer to the Book Blogger Hop. I agree with you.

I prefer reading and reviewing Christian Fiction but I do read a varity of other books. I just can’t handle too scary or gory. Suspense and Mysteries I like. No explicit adult books either if I do find one I really want to read I just skip over the x-rated stuff. So what genre do I read?

Thanks for stepping by!! I also don't like all the descriptiveness most of the time, unless it explores the characters!!!
